Looking for a Splitwise Alternative? An Honest Comparison

Looking for a Splitwise alternative with no daily expense limit? An honest look at Spliteo vs Splitwise: free plans, prices, currencies and how to switch.

Two expense sharing options side by side

Splitwise is a good app. It has been around for years, it has a big user base, and there’s a fair chance your friends already use it. So if you’re searching for an alternative, it’s probably not because Splitwise is broken. More likely you ran into the free plan’s daily expense limit halfway through a trip, or you just want to know what else is out there before you pay for something.

Full disclosure: this is the Spliteo blog, so we’re not neutral. What we can do is stick to facts you can check, link to the sources, and be upfront about when Splitwise might still be the better fit.

The daily expense limit, explained

Splitwise’s free plan limits how many expenses you can add per day. Splitwise’s own help center confirms the limit exists and that Splitwise Pro removes it, but it doesn’t publish the exact number. Users and reviewers report the cap at roughly 2 to 5 expenses a day, and it seems to vary.

If you only log the rent and a weekly grocery run, you may never notice. It shows up on the days when splitting is busiest:

  • Trips. An ordinary day in Lisbon can mean breakfast, a metro card top-up, museum tickets, lunch, a supermarket stop and dinner. That’s six expenses before anyone orders a drink.
  • Catching up. If you keep receipts and enter them all on Sunday night, a daily cap turns a ten-minute job into several days of entering a few at a time.
  • Moving in. The first days in a new shared apartment are a string of small purchases: cleaning supplies, a shower curtain, the first big grocery shop.

The official way around the cap is Splitwise Pro. In the US App Store it costs US$4.99 a month or US$39.99 a year (as of August 2026), and besides removing the cap it adds receipt scanning, currency conversion, search and charts (source). If those features are worth it to you, paying for Pro is a perfectly reasonable choice.

What Spliteo’s free plan includes

Spliteo is an expense-splitting app for the web, iOS and Android, built by a solo developer in Uruguay. The free plan has no daily or monthly cap on expenses. You can add as many as you need, whenever you need to.

The Free plan includes:

  • Up to 6 groups (the ones you created plus the ones you joined)
  • Unlimited expenses
  • 3 receipt scans per month
  • 1 budget, 1 savings goal and 1 active recurring expense
  • CSV export of the last 30 days

The core splitting tools aren’t Premium features. On the free plan you can have several people pay one expense, split by Evenly, Amount or Parts, add guest members, use more than one currency in a group and get settlement suggestions.

What Premium adds

Premium costs US$1.99 a month, US$19.99 a year, or US$59.99 once for lifetime access (lifetime is only available on the web). Prices in the app stores are localized, so they may be different where you live. Premium adds:

  • Unlimited groups
  • 20 receipt scans per month
  • Unlimited budgets, savings goals and recurring expenses
  • PDF exports (expenses and group summary) and CSV exports covering up to 365 days
  • Analytics charts and longer history
  • Receipt photo attachments
  • Multiple currencies in personal finance
  • All group icons and custom colors
  • The AI assistant connector, so you can use Spliteo from Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client (here’s how that works)

A few Spliteo details worth knowing

Balances stay in their own currency

If a trip is paid partly in euros and partly in dollars, Spliteo keeps two exact balances instead of forcing everything into one currency. A group can have up to 5 currencies when you create it and up to 10 later; the first one is the group’s default. When it’s time to settle, you can record that you paid in a different currency by entering the exchange rate or the amount you actually paid, and the debt is still cleared in its original currency.

Guests don’t need an account

Not everyone wants to install another app for one weekend away. Group admins can use Add Guest Members to add people by name. If a guest later accepts an email invite, their expenses move to their real account.

Settling with fewer payments

The group’s Summary tab has a Settlement card with a short list of who pays whom, per currency, designed to settle everything with as few payments as possible. When someone pays, tap Settle! to record it. On the Dashboard, Consolidated Balances shows your net balance with each person across all your groups.

Fast entry

You can type math into the amount field (for example 42.50 + 18), add up to 50 rows at once with Quick entry, and itemize a restaurant receipt with Split a Bill. Together with no daily cap, that makes catching up after a trip much less of a chore.

No bank connection, no fees

Spliteo doesn’t connect to your bank and doesn’t move money. You pay each other however you like (cash, bank transfer, Mercado Pago, Venmo) and record the payment in the app. There are no transaction fees. The app is available in English and Spanish, in light and dark mode, and you can sign in with email, Google or Apple.

When Splitwise might still be the better fit

If everyone you split with is already on Splitwise, you rarely add more than a couple of expenses a day, and the free plan does what you need, there’s no strong reason to move. Switching a group takes a little time and some coordination with the people in it. The same goes if you already pay for Pro and you’re happy with it.

Spliteo makes the most sense if you keep hitting the daily cap, split in more than one currency, or want a cheaper paid plan with the extras listed above.

How to switch from Splitwise to Spliteo

Spliteo doesn’t import data from Splitwise, so switching means starting fresh. It only takes a few minutes:

  1. Settle up or write down the balances. The cleanest option is to settle everything in Splitwise first. If that isn’t practical, note who owes whom and how much.
  2. Create the group. Go to Groups, tap New, and follow the Create New Group steps (Identity, Appearance, Currencies, Participants), then tap Create Group.
  3. Add the people. Tap Invite Members to invite by email, or use Create Shareable Link and drop the link in your group chat. For anyone who isn’t ready to sign up, use Add Guest Members.
  4. Carry over what’s owed. For each debt, add one starting expense paid by the person who is owed, with only the person who owes selected under Who Benefits?. For example, if Ana owed you €40, add a €40 expense called “Starting balance”, paid by you, with only Ana under Who Benefits?. Ana now owes you €40 in Spliteo too. (A Transfer from you to Ana for €40 gets the same result; an expense named “Starting balance” is just easier to recognize later.)
  5. Start adding expenses. Use New Transaction (the + button on mobile) as things happen.
