Gas split calculator for road trips
Work out the gas money for a road trip or carpool: enter the distance, your car's fuel economy and the gas price to see what the trip costs, tolls included, and what each person owes the one who paid. Riders who join for part of the way pay only for their part. It's free, needs no signup, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
The trip
We read 3.465 per gallon.
Who's in the car
Enter how far each person rode, in mi. Leave it empty for anyone who rides the whole way; on a round trip, count one way.

Splitting the rest of the trip too?
In a Spliteo group, everyone adds expenses as they happen, from gas to dinners, and sees who owes whom. For someone who rode half the way, split the gas by Parts: 2 for each full-trip rider, 1 for them. Free on web, iOS and Android.
Create a free groupHow it works
- Enter the one-way distance and tick round trip if you're coming back.
- Add your car's fuel economy in mpg, km/L or L/100 km, the gas price per gallon or litre, and any tolls or parking.
- Add everyone in the car, with the distance for anyone who rode only part of the way, then choose who drives and who paid. You'll see each share and who pays back whom.
Questions
- Should the driver pay a share of the gas?
- That's up to the group. Many split the gas money among everyone in the car, driver included, because it's everyone's trip. Others leave the driver out as thanks for driving and for the wear on the car. Untick "The driver pays a share too" to see it both ways.
- How do you split gas when someone rides only part of the way?
- In proportion to the distance each person rode. Someone who rides half the way pays half of what a full-trip rider pays, and the rest is split among the others. Tolls and parking are split the same way.
- mpg, km/L or L/100 km: which should I use?
- Whatever your car's display or manual shows. mpg is used in the US and the UK, but a UK gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon 3.785, so pick the right one; UK petrol is still priced per litre, and mixing the two works fine here. km/L is common in Latin America and L/100 km in Europe and Australia. Prices can be per litre or per US gallon; we show how we read the price under the field.
- Is anything I type saved?
- Not on our servers. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent. What you enter lives only in the page's link, after the #, and browsers never send that part to a server.
