Split bill calculator: by item, with tax and tip

Split the check evenly or by what each person ordered, with shared dishes split only among the people who had them. Tax and tip are split in proportion, everything adds up to the cent, and if one person paid, you see what everyone owes them. It's free, needs no signup, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

The bill

How to split the bill

Who's at the table

What each person ordered for themselves. Several dishes? Add them with a plus: 12+8.50.

Shared dishes

Starters, a bottle of wine, a cover charge: anything several people had.

Tax and tip

Add tax only if menu prices don't include it, like US sales tax.

Each person

  • Maya54.05

    ordered 34.00 · shared 13.00 · tip 7.05

  • Tom35.65

    ordered 28.00 · shared 3.00 · tip 4.65

  • Priya50.60

    ordered 31.00 · shared 13.00 · tip 6.60

  • Leo43.70

    ordered 25.00 · shared 13.00 · tip 5.70

Priya paid the bill, so everyone else pays them back:

  • Maya pays Priya54.05
  • Tom pays Priya35.65
  • Leo pays Priya43.70

3 payments settle everything.

Eat out together often?

In a Spliteo group, Split a Bill lets you add the receipt's items (or scan it: 3 scans a month on the free plan), assign each one to whoever had it and add the tip. The result goes into the group's balances, so you settle up once at the end. Free on web, iOS and Android.

How it works

  1. Add everyone at the table and what each person ordered for themselves. To split the whole bill equally instead, switch to Evenly and enter the bill.
  2. Add the dishes several people shared, like starters or a bottle of wine, and tap the names of the people who had each one. Each dish is split equally among them.
  3. Enter the tax if menu prices don't include it, and the tip. Both are split in proportion to what each person had. Pick who paid to see what everyone owes them.

Questions

How is the tip split?
In proportion to each person's part of the bill, so whoever ordered more leaves a little more tip, and the same goes for tax. The tip is worked out on the bill before tax unless you tick "Tip on the total after tax". Amounts are rounded to the cent so they add up exactly to the total.
How much should we tip?
It depends on where you are. In the US, 15 to 20% of the bill before tax is usual. In the UK a service charge is often already on the bill; if it is, tick "Service is already included in the bill". In much of Europe tips are smaller and optional. These are customs, not rules.
How are shared dishes split?
Each shared dish is split equally among the people you pick for it, so whoever skipped the wine doesn't pay for it. A cover charge per person can go in as a shared dish for everyone. When a dish doesn't divide evenly, one of the people who shared it pays the extra cent.
Is anything I type saved?
Not on our servers. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent. What you enter lives only in the page's link, after the #, and browsers never send that part to a server.
