Rent split calculator by room size

Enter the rent and the size of each room, in sq ft or m², to see what each roommate or flatmate pays. Part of the rent covers the shared space and is split evenly per person; the rest is split by square footage, with extra for features like a private bathroom. It's free, needs no signup, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Rent and rooms

50%

50% of the rent pays for the kitchen, living room and other shared space, and is split evenly per person. The rest is split by room size.

Utilities, internet or building fees, added to each person's total.

Extra %: how much more a room is worth than its size says, for a private bathroom, a balcony or more light. With +10% it counts as 10% bigger. A negative number makes it count as smaller: -10% for a room with no window, down to -50%.

How it works

  1. Enter the monthly rent, any bills you split evenly, and how much of the rent pays for the shared space.
  2. Add each room with its size in sq ft or m², how many people sleep in it and an extra % for features like a private bathroom.
  3. See what each person pays, next to an equal split and a split by size alone.

Questions

How much of the rent counts as shared space?
There's no fixed rule. Think about how much of the home all the housemates use: the kitchen, the living room, the hallways, a shared bathroom. At 0% the whole rent follows room size, and at 100% everyone pays the same. Half is a reasonable place to start; adjust it until the result feels fair to everyone.
How do I account for a private bathroom or a balcony?
Give that room an extra %. A room with +10% counts as if it were 10% bigger, so it takes more of the rent that's split by size and the other rooms pay a bit less. The shared part doesn't change, and the shares always add up to the rent. A room with a drawback, like no window, can take a negative extra instead, such as -10%. There's no standard figure for each feature, so agree on it together.
What if a couple shares a room?
Set that room to 2 people. Each of them pays a full share of the shared space, since both use the kitchen and the living room, and they split their room's part between them. If your household would rather count the couple as one, leave the room at 1 person.
How do I keep track of the rent every month?
In a Spliteo group, add the rent as an expense and split it by Amount, with the figures above, or by Parts: 900, 800 and 700 are 9, 8 and 7 parts. There's no percentage mode, but parts do the same job. To have it added each month by itself, create it as a recurring expense with each person's amount from above: recurring expenses take exact amounts, not parts. The free plan includes one active recurring expense; Premium makes them unlimited.
